(David Eng - English) I propose a discussion along two
lines. First, attention to the presence of immigrants as well as
"illegal immigration" (Mexican and Vietnamese communities, for
example) in New Orleans would help to open up a broader conversation about
Black/White relations as well as a discussion of global capitalism (NAFTA) and
its relation to U.S. Empire (from the Vietnam War to the occupation of
Iraq.) Second, a geographical perspective (perhaps beyond the scope
of this paper) would offer another vista on New Orleans and Katrina. The
aerial pictures of Katrina are, in Kracauer's words, the "mass
ornament" of our times. This is a different perspective of the myths
and expanses of American frontier mythology, and I think that Katrina here
connects with other things like the aerial perspectives of Rodney King and the
Los Angeles rebellion.
