(Niki
Dickerson- Labor Studies and Employment Relations) Given what we know about the relationship between patterns
of residential segregation and racial employment inequality in the US, my
contribution will examine various scenarios that are likely to unfold under
different relocation paradigms. Using information about the settlement patterns
of the relocation effort, this work will discuss the potential employment
barriers facing displaced Gulf Coast residents. The article will propose
solutions to reduce the isolation attendant to residential segregation and the
poor employment outcomes that typically result. Among potential policy
responses, I emphasize the importance of organizational intermediaries, which
are organizations that actively create relationships between marginalized
groups (displaced residents) and employers.
